Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are coming to the Supreme Court while libel cases continue
The opening remarks ended on the first day of Johnny Depp’s multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, which began in Virginia on Monday morning (April 11) with a jury selection.
Seven judges and four deputies were selected to hear the case. He maintains a 2018 article written by Heard in Washington Post – where she talked about domestic violence against women – hinted that Depp, her ex-husband, was violent.
Although the 35-year-old did not name the actor, Depp’s lawyers say Heard’s allegations made it difficult for the 58-year-old to get a role he previously held.
Depp is known for acting in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Sweeney Todd and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Heard has appeared in titles including Aquaman and Drive angry.
He is seeking $ 50 million (£ 38.2 million) in damages during the trial in Fairfax County Courthouse. Heard has meanwhile filed a counterclaim for defamation against Depp, whom she divorced in 2017, for inconvenience.
Depp has previously lost a defamation suit in the UK against a British newspaperThe sun regarding claims in the Heard 2018 article.

Heard said in 2020 that she wanted to be “left alone”
ICYMI: Appeared as a witness in the trial of Depp against the British newspaper The sun in 2020, Heard said she wanted to be “left alone” and wanted her ex-husband to stop litigation over allegations of domestic abuse to “save him trouble”.
“I did not want to do this, I did not want to reveal this whole thing of what really happened to me,” Heard told the Royal Courts of Justice in London. “I did not want to talk about everything that happened in our marriage and happened in our relationship.
Although Depp denies the allegations, Heard told the court about 14 allegations of “violence” by Depp between 2013 and 2016, in places such as a rented house in Australia, his private island in the Bahamas and a private jet, such as Associated Press reported two years ago.
A judge ruled in favor of Depp, who blamed the publisher The sun off defaming him with a headline including the words “owner”. His lawyers then called the judge’s decision “wrong”.

ICYMI: Heard is characterized by the plaintiff’s legal team as a compulsive liar who conceals one lie with another and used the accusations against Depp to further his own career and portray himself as a heroic and innocent survivor of abuse.
Depp’s team admits his use of drugs and alcohol, but that does not make him a violent man.

Why is the trial in Virginia?
Despite the fact that the couple both live in California, the defamation lawsuit that Depp filed against his ex-wife is in Virginia, where the trial will take place in the Fairfax County District Court.
Online versions of Washington Post are published through servers located in Fairfax County, which is considered to be one of the reasons why Depp’s lawyers decide the location.
The second is due to a law against Slapp Virginia, which is not as extensive as that in California. The provision allows a person to claim protection against a lawsuit when he talks about issues that concern the public.
Heard’s lawyers, who have filed a defamation suit, are expected to use the law against Slapp during the trial. It comes four years after her Washington Post an article called: I spoke out against sexual violence – and faced the wrath of our culture. That must change.
